How To Differentiate Between Desalination And Water Purification ?
People often misunderstood the concepts of desalination and water purification. Most of us consider both the things as one. However, both of them differ in one way or the other. Water desalination is a subcategory of water purification. The article here differentiates the two subjects in detail.
Desalinization is a process by which the salt content of water is done away and water is made worth drinking. This process is also named as desalination. Whereas purification includes doing away with all the impurities of seawater, surface water and reclaimed water.
Basically, removal of salt from water is considered as desalination. Processes like filtration and distillation are not new rather people use to pure and clean the water by these techniques and thus, making it drinkable. However, suspended particles and impurities can be easily removed from seawater as compared to those that is dissolved in water.
All over the world, even the highest distillation plants make use of reverse osmosis technique to remove aqueous salts from the water. Using this technique, apart from the salts, most of the waterborne diseases are also removed from it making water amply pure.
Water purification techniques that are adequate for processing lake water into drinking water are not enough to process seawater. And so here lies the main difference between the water desalinization and purification.
Both the systems, water purification and desalinization have some similarities also. A desalinization system which makes the water drinkable by removing the dissolved salts, purify the water by itself. The commercial Reverse Osmosis plants not only desalinize the water but also treat the lake or even sewage water into drinkable form.
For locations where, energy use is not an issue distillation plants will process seawater or any other source of water into drinking water. Micro filtration or other freshwater purification plants are unable to process seawater into drinking water.
Desalinization is becoming more and more popular all over the world. Basically, the process can be done by two different methods that are, thermal and membrane. Membrane desalination utilizes either pressure or electrical current. Thermal desalination heats water to the point of boiling, creating steam which then condenses into fresh water. Thermal desalination is the easiest method of desalinating water at home.
