How Do You Backup Nintendo Wii Games Legally?
If you’re like a lot of new Wii purchasers, the first thing that you Google when you bring your new console home is “How Do I Copy Wii Games?” Once you find out what the process is, the next question is often one of legality.
Now, for that second question, the answer is indubitably a “Yes.” There is no question that it is legal to make copies of your Wii games. There are some caveats, though, making the long answer to that question a bit more complex. I’ll talk about that next.
There’s been much debate over the years, but the answer is found in the Fair Use Act, which in a nutshell says that people are legally able to copy, rip, burn, backup, or whatever you want to call it, if the user are the purchaser of the master disc. This includes music, games, and movies and all other forms of media.
In fact, it is advised that users burn media, ASAP after buying it. By this, the user makes sure that a backup is accessible in case the master is lost, damaged or stolen. Additionally, the copy can be used regularly, while the original is put away in a safe place. Bottom line: there is no lawful recourse for backing up games. The United States Government is not going to come knocking on down your door, or fine you for lots of cash.
However, there is an issue that you need to be aware of when learning how to copy wii games. You can’t just copy a game with Windows Media Player. You need to use a special program that can get past the copywrite protections from the manufacturer. Game companies put encryptions on games to try and keep you from making backups so that you’ll have to buy a replacement when the original fails.
The manufacturers can do nothing to completely prevent this from happening, but they can make it hard. The protections themselves are perfectly lawful, but removing them is equally as lawful.
Not everyone is an expert in encryption, however. So a couple of enterprising software makers have created PC applications that will help you to both de-encrypt and copy your Wii games quickly and easily.
